George Ballard, Chair of General Hydrogen Corporation and Chairman Emeritus of the Canadian Hydrogen Association, founded Ballard Power Systems in 1979. He brought together and funded a technical team to explore the development of high energy density power systems. In 1983, Ballard began the development of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells.
